Collecting textiles for the Twin Cities Marathon

This was another successful marathon for runners and the environment.  For the third year in a row, USAgain has partnered with the Twin Cities Marathon to collect clothing discarded by runners along the race’s lengthy route.  On October 3, 2010, perfectly good clothing (well, maybe it was a bit sweaty) – typically trashed – was diverted from the landfill to be reused somewhere in the world.  And this was no small collection – this year, we collected nearly 3,000 pounds of clothing.  Other than the satisfaction gained from completing a difficult and long marathon, runners had the added bonus of generating thousands of dollars for various charities.  USAgain donated $0.02 for every pound of clothing collected to local charities.

If we can do this for the Twin Cities Marathon, what’s next?

Stay tuned for more from USAgain!
